MAMCOS is the popular acronym for Malnad Areca Marketing Co-operative Society Limited, in and around Shivamogga. It came into existence in the year 1939 with the sole intention of protecting the interest of areca growers. The Society was established under the president-ship of the then Deputy Commissioner of Shimoga Shri M. Sheshadri on 08-11-1939. Initially there were 659 members with 5,121 bags of arecanut. The Society started its activities with Rs.16,031 Share Capital. The very next year it earned a net profit of Rs.3,867 and declared a dividend of 6.25%. Later on the MAMCOS progressed with great success and never turned back. At present it has 22,316 members with stable financial backing. From the inception upto this period the society is earning profit and declaring dividend every year. It has the fame of the society declaring dividend every year with always profit.
The main objectives of the society is to ensure organised market facilities for the areca growers and other allied crops grown by the members and farmers, providing protected storage for the products brought by members and selling them according to the prices chosen by the grower, lending loan for harvesting, making advanced payment for produces brought by them, preservative activities etc.
The society has the administrative scope at Shivamogga, Chickmagaluru revenue districts and Channagiri and Honnali revenue taluks of Davanagere District. Totally 16 taluks come under the administrative jurisdiction of the society.
